D1

Medan - Parapat

Leave Kuala Namu Airport and drive via a scenic road with magnificent views over estate plantations of rubber and palm oil to Parapat, a small town on the shors of Lake Toba.

D2

Samosir Island

Visit Ambarita, a most interesting Batak Toba village which is well-known for its unique stone chairs, tribunals and execution stones where enemies and criminals were slaughtered and eaten by this once-cannibalistic tribe, then enjoy a traditional dance performance and then board a boat to visit the island’s capital of Pangururan and a relaxing soak in the hot springs of Tele. Board a local ferry for a one hour boat trip to Tomok on Samosir Island. You’ll arrive in the early evening.

The island of Samosir, which is roughly the size of Singapore, is located in the middle of Lake Toba. The caldera lake of Toba Volcano is the largest volcanic lake in the world.

head to the city center of Medan, the capital of North Sumatra and an interesting melting pot of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Batak people living together in harmony. Walk through the old colonial part of the town which has retained its Dutch colonial architecture – the old Post office and Medan City Hall, finishing at the historic Tip Top restaurant for lunch.

In the mid-afternoon, visit Maimoon Sultan’s Deli Palace, built in1888 by the Sultan of Deli (the former name of Medan). This beautiful palace combines traditional elements of Malay, Islamic, Spanish and Indian architectural elements. Even up to present times, the palace is inhabited by the Sultan, who remains a symbolic figure of importance to the Indonesian community. Continue on to the Great Mosque (built in 1906 by the first sultan and still considered as one the most beautiful mosques in the country) before finishing the day with a visit to the Chinese temple, Vihara Gunung Timur.

D2

Bukit Lawang and Eco Farm

After breakfast leave Medan for Bukit Lawang where you’ll cross an impressive wooden suspension bridge by foot, over the Bohorok River to get to the Eco Lodge where you’ll be staying.
Following lunch, a becak or motorized sidecar will lead from the local village to the eco farm nearby. You’ll see how palm sugar is made and rubber trees are tapped.

Overnight in Bukit Lawang.

D3

Orang Utans

Bukit Lawang is at the entrance to Gunung Leuser National Park and is one of the last sanctuaries of the Sumatran orangutan.

Start an unforgettable trek early in the morning with an easy climb into the forest for about 40 minutes. A tracker will be sent ahead to check where the Orang Utans are. Total trekking time is two and a half to three hours up and down in the jungle -it’s a bit more challenging and can be slippery, so good shoes are required.

After observing orangutans continue down to the Orang Utan Information Centre on the bank of the Bohorok River then back to the Eco Lodge along the river bank and main village of Bukit Lawang .

Note:  Camera fee is not included and must be paid locally IDR 50,000/camera (around USD 4) and IDR 150,000/video (around USD 11)  each time you enter the Gunung Leuser National Park

In the afternoon, leave Bukit Lawang for Berastagi in the Karo highlands along a scenic route driving southwards via Sembahe and Sibolangit. In the late afternoon you will arrive at Berastagi, a climate station located at some 1,400 meters above sea-level.

Overnight in Berastagi

D4

Lake Toba and Samosir Island

Depart around 8am for a short city tour of Berastagi, including an outside visit of St. Fransiscus Catholic Church, with its unique Batak architecture and picture perfect background of Mount Sibayak. Continue with a walk in the local fruit market which is swarming with activity and scenes from traditional Karo life. From here it’s a drive to Lake Toba stopping for the views of Mount Sinabung.

Stop for a visit to Dokan, a village home to the Batak Karo people who have unusual wedding and funeral ceremonies which can last for days and dozens of other unique traditions and rituals which are still in practice. Then meet with a family in one of the longhouses where up to 6 families can be found living harmoniously together.

Continue to the South towards Lake Toba and make a stop to see the 120 meter Sipiso-piso waterfall in the Batak highlands. The beautiful fall is formed by an underground river that then plunges from a cave into Lake Toba’s caldera. Then journey to Pematang Purba for a visit Rumah Bolon, a 200 year old wooden house that used to be the dwelling of the ancient Batak Simalungun Kings.

After lunch, drive along the eastern shore of Lake Toba
Overnight on Samosir Island.

D5

Samosir Island

A full day exploring Samosir Island and Lake Toba starts with a

Return to your hotel in TukTuk late in the-afternoon.

Overnight in Samosir.

D6

To Medan

After an early wakeup call and breakfast, drive to Parapat to catch the ferry back to the main land then drive back to Medan through scenic rubber and palm plantations.
