Trip Highlights

Sumatra Jungle Trek Adventure will let you explore Sumatra’s natural beauty. You will also be able to discover its amazing wildlife and trek through the pristine rainforest. You’ll have a chance to see and experience the incredible orangutans of Bukit Lawang. We will then journey to the beautiful Lake Toba and reach the summit of the majestic Sibayak volcano. Learn some rainforest survival skills from your local guides including path-finding, setting up camp, fishing, and cooking, as well as foraging for food and medicine. You’ll also have a chance to witness the traditional Batak dance in Simanindo.

Join Medan, transfer to Bukit Lawang (approx 4-5hrs)

You will be met at Kuala Namu Airport by our local agent who will accompany you to Bukit Lawang. Once at Bukit Lawang you can enjoy the rest of the day acclimatising and relaxing before your evening dinner.

Overnight: Lodge.

    Note : Flights should arrive prior to 12:00.

Bukit Lawang

This morning you will have an early start to for your trek to the orangutan feeding station in the Gunung Leuser National Park, the first step for once captive orang-utans learning to live in the wild. This morning’s trek gives you the opportunity to find your forest feet. At the feeding platform you will be able to see the semi-wild orang-utans in their natural habitat.

Trekking Gunung Leuser National Park

This morning we set out on our trek into Gunung Leuser National Park. Over the next five days you will experience some steep climbs and ascents with the aid of rope and a hand or two from your local guides. You will learn some rainforest survival skills from your local guides: path-finding, setting up camp, fishing, foraging for food and medicine, making fires and cooking.

The terrain you will be trekking on will be extremely steep, but the views spectacular, with plenty of stops to help you to acclimatise and adjust to the local conditions. Gunung Leuser National Park is mostly mountainous, covering a million hectares, straddling the borders of North Sumatra and Aceh provinces.

Trekking Landak river

This morning after breakfast we trek to the Landak River. While going deeper into the rainforest your chances of encountering wildlife will increase. At noon your guides will prepare you a simple jungle lunch on the top of a hill. Fantastic scenery along the way through the national park will be then a memorable experience for you. Here is a big chance to see wild orangutans and black gibbons.

Trekking Gunung Leuser National Park

After breakfast you will discover the deeper jungle while hiking further upstream of the Landak River to Uning. If you are lucky here you can see the Sumatran tiger, deer, wild pigs and other habitants of the tropical rainforest.

Trekking Bohorok river

Today we continue in the direction to the Bohorok River. In the afternoon you can relax and swim. If you are lucky you can observe there the Sumatran monitor lizards, tortoises and colourful river butterflies around the campsite.

To Bukit Lawang

After waking late, having breakfast, swimming or just relaxing around the camp. Then it’s time to return to Bukit Lawang and that is around 2.5 hours full of fun! Because your “jungle taxi” will bring you back by traditional tube-rafting down the Bohorok River.

Rest of the afternoon free to rest or have a swim in the Bohorok river next to the hotel.

Bukit Lawang village tour

A half day becak (traditional Tuk-Tuk-taxi) adventure will take you along green rice fields, rubber plantations and through the unique villages surrounding Bukit Lawang.

To Berastagi (5-6 hours)

This morning we journey by road to Berastagi, perched on a plateau and surrounded by two volcanoes: Gunung Sinabung to the west (which was very active in 2013) and the smoking Gunung Sibayak to the north. Because of the cool climate, this was a popular escape for the Dutch who built some beautiful colonial houses. Berastagi is an agricultural trade centre and its markets are always humming with activity. Have a look at the famous fruit market, where you find and endless choice of exotic fruits.

Climb Sibayak volcano, transfer to Lake Toba.

The 2094m high Sibayak volcano is on of the most accessible volcano’s in Indonesia. Accompanied by a guide you leave early morning to the starting point. From here it’s only a bit more than an hour to climb up to the magnificent crater. You will witness several active sulphur springs. The colours yellow and green are predominate. If the weather is clear you have a fantastic view on the Sinabung volcano. Back to the hotel for breakfast and than continue your journey to Lake Toba. Lake Toba is a wonderful lake, where the amiable Christian Batak people reside.

Everywhere you will be welcomed with a chorus of “horas” (welcome) to greet you at every turn. Danau Toba is the largest lake in South-east Asia; covering a massive 1707 sq km. Samosir is located in the middle and almost as big as Singapore.The Bataks were among the most warlike peoples in Sumatra. Today there are more than six million Bataks, divided into six main linguistic groups. The majority of today’s Bataks are Protestant Christians, although many still practise elements of animist belief. The Bataks are famous for their powerful and emotive hymn singing and a Batak man is never far from his guitar!

Lake Toba cycling

Cycling on Samosir is quite pleasant because there is not so much traffic and it’s a great way to get into contact with the friendly Bataks. The aim of the bike trip is to witness the traditional Batak dancing in Simanindo. Here is also a small museum housed in the formerly home of Rajah Simalungun, a Batak king, and his 14 wives. On the way back to Tuk Tuk you visit the stone chairs in Ambarita. In former times important matters were discussed among village elders and wrong doers were beheaded here.

Lake Toba boat trip

Today you make a boat trip on the lake to the not touristic side. You will make a short hike and visit a school in a small village (closed during school holidays). You will be touched by the warm welcome of the children. Back to the boat you set sail to a nice waterfall for a swim and a delicious lunch on board. The whole tour will be accompanied by Batak singers who will cheer up your day! You you will be transferred to Medan. You will arrive in Medan in the late evening.
