The Essence of Sumba Hideaway
5 days / 4 nights | West and Southwest Sumba, Indonesia | Private tour
Sumba is the Indonesia most people never see: deserted beaches, clear lagoons, waterfalls in the rice fields, and villages where ancient traditions are still very much alive. Pair that with two of Indonesia’s most beautiful luxury resorts and you have a short escape that feels a world away from Bali, just an hour’s flight from it.
This is an example itinerary. We can tailor it, or add it on to a Bali holiday.
From NZ$6,170 per person twin share, low season.
Domestic flights are not included in the tour price (Bali to Tambolaka, Sumba, and return). We quote these separately, along with your international flights.
Highlights

Day by Day
Fly in to Tambolaka airport in West Sumba, where your English-speaking guide meets you outside the terminal. A scenic drive of about an hour through the West Sumba countryside brings you to your beachfront resort in Kodi.
The rest of the day is yours to settle in and enjoy the resort.
Meals: Lunch, dinner
Domestic flight not included.
A slow morning at the resort, then in the late afternoon head out to Tosi, a traditional village in the Kodi area set among old trees and megalithic stone graves. Few travellers make it here, and the community still keeps its ancestral rituals alive, including the famous Pasola festival.
Next is Weekuri Lake, a crystal-clear saltwater lagoon perfect for a swim, with the ocean just beyond the rocks. Finish next door at Mandorak Beach, a small cove framed by tall rock cliffs, to watch the sun go down over the Indian Ocean.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Travel south-east to West Lamboya and its long, empty white-sand beaches, with stops along the way.
See Waikelo Sawah, where clear blue water pours from a cave into the rice paddies, then take an easy walk through the fields at Waikacura, past farmers at work, to a tiered waterfall tumbling through the rice terraces and palms.
Cross a bamboo bridge to Lapopu Waterfall to relax, or swim out under the falls if you are feeling brave. After a picnic lunch, visit Waigali Village, known for its uniquely carved ancient tombs, where the Rato (traditional leader) welcomes you into his home to share stories of local customs. Then on to your new resort.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch
A free day to enjoy your pool villa and the beach. In the evening, a private candlelit dinner on a secluded stretch of sand, with fresh line-caught seafood and local dishes to the sound of the waves.
Meals: Breakfast, dinner
Breakfast and free time until your guide collects you for the drive to Tambolaka airport (about 1.5 hours) for your flight back to Bali.
Meals: Breakfast
Domestic flight not included.
