South East Asia Ocean Cruises
I’m Andrew Prins, an Auckland-based South East Asia specialist. I help New Zealand travellers pick the right ship and itinerary, then arrange the flights and hotel stays either side of the cruise.
Ocean cruising in Southeast Asia offers an unparalleled way to explore the region’s diverse cultures and stunning landscapes.
Voyages range from large ocean liners providing luxurious amenities to smaller, more intimate ships that can navigate hidden coves.
Experience vibrant cities like Singapore, ancient temples in Thailand, the breathtaking limestone karsts of Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, and the pristine beaches of Indonesia.
Cruises often feature a blend of cultural excursions, opportunities for snorkeling and diving in vibrant coral reefs, and the chance to savor unique local cuisine.
With various itineraries available, you can immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of this captivating part of the world.

Which Cruise Is Right for You?
These are the questions I’m asked most often when helping New Zealanders choose an ocean cruise in South East Asia.
Luxury lines offer premium amenities, personalised service and upscale experiences. Mainstream lines offer better value, with a wider choice of entertainment and dining.
Think about what you will really use on board: the entertainment, activities and facilities, or a quieter ship where the ports are the main attraction.
It depends on the kind of trip you want. Large ocean liners offer extensive onboard facilities and are very suitable for families, or for travellers who want a lighter, less in-depth experience of the region.
Smaller ships feel more personal and can reach quieter, less-crowded ports. First-time cruisers can happily choose a small ship if that is the experience they are after.
Start with where you want to go, for example Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia. Then think about how much time you want in cities compared with tranquil islands.
It is also worth checking which activities and excursions are offered at each port of call, and how many days are at sea compared with days in port.
Choose a cruise length that suits your schedule, from short getaways to extended voyages.
A night before and a night after the cruise reduces the stress of flights. Better still, add a few nights at each end of the cruise to take in some of the sights before and after.
The surprise costs are usually gratuities and shore excursions, so check whether they are included.
If a drinks package is offered and you enjoy a few drinks and coffees, I would recommend it. Also check whether Wi-Fi is included.
Pricier cruises often have more inclusions. Once you compare a lower-priced cruise plus its add-on extras with a pricier cruise, the difference in cost may be very small, but the experience can be vastly different.
