Central Java Historical Sites
10 days / 9 nights | Central Java, Indonesia | Private tour
A slower, deeper look at the heart of Java. Start in colonial Semarang, then stay on a hillside coffee plantation to explore little-visited temples and a steam railway museum. Watch the sun rise over Borobudur, join village life in Candirejo, and finish with Prambanan and a sunset at Ratu Boko. Three outstanding five-star hotels make it as relaxing as it is fascinating.
This is an example itinerary. We can tailor the hotels, pace and inclusions to suit you.
From NZ$5,170 per person twin share, low season.
Domestic flights are not included in the tour price (for example Jakarta or Bali to Semarang, and onward from Yogyakarta). We quote these separately, along with your international flights.

Day by Day
Your English-speaking guide meets you outside the terminal at Semarang airport. After a local lunch, take a short look around Semarang, a port city where Chinese and Dutch history meet. Visit the Sam Poo Kong temple, linked to the famous Chinese explorer Zheng He, and Lawang Sewu, the grand old Dutch railway office known for its “thousand doors” and its ghost stories.
Then continue to Magelang (about 1.5 hours) and your resort, Mesastila, a luxury retreat on a working coffee plantation filled with antiques, historic joglo villas and even a restored colonial railway station.
Meals: Lunch
Domestic flight to Semarang not included.
A free day to settle into the tropical climate and enjoy the resort.
Meals: Breakfast
Join an hour-long walk through the resort’s organic Robusta and Arabica coffee plantation, see beans roasted and ground the traditional way, then taste the coffee alongside jamu, the Javanese herbal drink.
In the late afternoon, enjoy a two-hour “Spirit of Java” spa treatment: a natural skin cleanse, a Javanese massage and a soothing herbal bath.

Drive up to Bandungan for the Gedong Songo temples, a Hindu complex on the slopes of Mount Ungaran that is older than Borobudur and Prambanan, with sweeping valley views.
Then step back into the age of steam at the Ambarawa Railway Museum, the former Willem I station, with 21 steam locomotives on display (four still working) including two original century-old B25 engines.
Meals: Breakfast
Check out late morning and stop at the OHD Museum, a private collection of around 2,000 works of Indonesian art from historical to contemporary, including Affandi and S. Sudjojono. (The museum is closed on Tuesdays.)
Walk a green path to lunch overlooking the Selogriyo rice terraces, then check in to your resort on the hills facing Borobudur Temple.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch
An early start (4.30 am) is well worth it. Watch the sun rise over Borobudur and the surrounding volcanoes from Dagi Hill, then explore this vast Buddhist monument and its stories with your guide.
Enjoy a light breakfast and coffee with temple views, and be back at the resort by midday for a free afternoon.
Meals: Breakfast
Spend a half day in Candirejo, a traditional village surrounded by countryside. Walk the village lanes, try your hand at a gamelan session and a wayang puppet workshop, and chat with the locals about their traditions. After a traditional Javanese lunch in the village, return to the resort.
