Vietnam Visa Guide for New Zealanders
New Zealand citizens need a visa to visit Vietnam – there’s no visa-free exemption, even for a short holiday. The good news is that Vietnam’s e-visa system makes this a straightforward, entirely online process.
Do New Zealanders Need a Visa for Vietnam?
Yes, unlike some nationalities, New Zealand passport holders need a visa for any visit to Vietnam, tourism included. For most travellers, the simplest and cheapest route is the e-visa, applied for online before you fly.
If you’re a dual citizen you may be able to get in under their visa free agreement with other countries if you enter and exit with the other passport.
A word of warning: visa rules and fees can change, so it’s worth double-checking current requirements on the official portal a few months before your travel date. This guide reflects the requirements as we understand them in 2026.
The Vietnam e-Visa - What You Need to Know
- Single entry costs US$25; multiple entry costs US$50
- Applied for entirely online – no embassy visit required
- Accepted at Vietnam’s major international airports (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang) plus a number of land and sea border crossings
What You’ll Need to Apply
- A passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date
- A scan of your passport photo page
- A recent passport-style digital photo (4x6cm) – a selfie is generally fine as long as the background is light and plain
- An email address – your approved e-visa is sent by email, so print it (and keep a digital copy) to bring with you
How to Apply
Apply directly at the official Vietnam e-visa portal, evisa.gov.vn – this is the only government site. Do not apply through any other third-party website.
Processing typically takes about a week, so apply at least several weeks before you fly, with extra buffer around Tet (Vietnamese New Year, usually late January to February), when processing can slow down.
Once approved, print your e-visa and keep both a paper and digital copy with you for the trip.
